WELCOME TO SENIOR LiA!

This unique program is a capstone to punctuate the end of a senior’s learning journey through LCA. It scaffolds the real life experience of searching for and landing a job with the support of their self-selected LCA LiA Advisor.
With an intentional focus on providing students with opportunities to meaningfully engage in the community and put their learning into action, students will participate in a two-week, full-time, real life experience volunteering and shadowing within a local organization across a variety of fields.
LCA has partnered with over 35 different organizations and have close to 90 open positions for students to explore. This internal job database must be accessed with an lca.edu email address. Seniors can schedule a meeting with Mrs. Noh for more information on any of the positions and to assist with the job matching process.
FAQs

Can my part-time job count as my Senior LiA?

Yes. Any student who has an existing part time job and is able to increase to mostly full-time hours (25+ hours per week), can count that as Senior LiA hours.  Simply submit your work log validated by your work supervisor and submit to your LCA LiA Advisor.  Students should, however, still participate in all resume writing, LinkedIn Development and Interview Skills workshops.

I want to continue to volunteer with my Chapel Pod organization. Can that count?

Yes. Any student who has an existing volunteer position with any organization and is able to increase to mostly full-time hours (25+ hours per week), can count that as Senior LiA hours.  Simply submit your work log validated by your supervisor and submit to your LCA LiA Advisor.  Students should, however, still participate in all resume writing, LinkedIn Development and Interview Skills workshops.

Do I have to choose a placement through the LCA LiA Database or can I find a placement on my own?

If you have connections and want to find a placement on your own, that is great! Please schedule a meeting with Mrs. Noh through her meeting calendar to share more details and contact information, and we will go from there!

My “work hours” for my LiA placement are not typical work hours (e.g., 8am-4pm). Is that okay?

Yes. Organizations have different needs and working hours that meet their needs is the most important.

Do I have to work 40 hours a week for my Senior LiA placement?

No one is going to “bean count.” Our goal is for all seniors to be working as close to full-time as possible, ideally 25-30 hrs/week but the priority is for your job to help the organization where you are working. You should be working enough hours that you are truly getting a full working experience, understand the operations and missions of your organization and to develop transferable skills you can use in the real work, post high school.

My family is planning to go on vacation. Can that count as my Senior LiA?

No. Vacations do not count for LiA hours.

I am already participating in an out-of-town organization/program that is within the industry/field that I want to go into. Can that count as my Senior LiA?

Probably! Please set up a meeting with Mrs. Noh through her meeting calendar to discuss.

I’m going to go on college visits during the LiA weeks. Can that count?

No. Visiting colleges is great and you should do that!  However, they do not fullfill your LiA requirement. The heart of Senior LiA is to give you real life experience searching for, landing and working at a job.

Do I have to participate? What happens if I don’t do my Senior LiA?

Your Senior LiA is the capstone and final part of your LCA educational journey. It is a graduation requirement.

Do I have to stay at one organization for both weeks of Senior LiA?

Yes. All placements should be with one organization to allow you enough time to really learn about the organization and to learn skills related to your given tasks.

What do I do if I can’t finish my placement?

Please speak with your LCA LiA Advisor if issues arise during your LiA placement.

Does LCA provide transportation to my LiA placement?

No. Part of searching and landing a job is to be able to get there.  If you are unable to get to your placement, that is not a good fit for you at this time. There are some placements that are remote; please consider those. There are also some placements at LCA that are happy to take on LCA students.

I’m participating in the Harvard MEDScience program which is only 4 days. Do I have to do anything else?

No. Your participation in this intensive program will fulfill your full Senior LiA requirements.

How many positions should I apply for?

Definitely more than one. Many organizations only have openings for 1 or 2 students.  You need to put your best foot forward through your resume, cover letter and interview to get the job. Please know that, as is with any real job, just because you submit an application, it does not automatically mean you will be offered an interview. Just because you interview, it does not automatically mean you will get the job.

I already have a resume. Do I need to go to the resume writing workshop?

Yes. That’s great you have a resume! You are ahead of the game! The workshop will also give you an opportunity to customize your resume to match the positions you are applying for. You will also learn how to write cover letters.

Is Senior LiA for a grade?

Senior LiA is pass/fail but it is a graduation requirement.  Engage fully. You will get out of it what you put in.

Can I get paid for my LiA placement?

Unless you are fulfilling your LiA placement through an existing paid job you have, the answer is No. All LiA placements are volunteer and you should not receive pay.  You will, however, be given academic credit for it. That said, if you continue to work for your organization AFTERWARD, it is between you and the organization if you can continue your work with them for pay.

Can anyone access the LCA LiA Database?

No. You must have an lca.edu account to access our LCA LiA Database.

Can I access the LCA LiA Database from home?

Yes!

Who can be my Senior LiA Advisor?

Any adult who works at LCA can serve as your LiA Advisor.  You must ask them and receive confirmation that they can serve as your Advisor before submitting the form. Any one Advisor can only accept up to 3 students. Who they accept is up to them! If you are in a position working for LCA, your Advisor and Field Supervisor can be the same person unless he/she prefers otherwise.
