Since 2013, Broadway Follies has been a yearly tradition at LCA, and one of the highlights of the year for members of Chamber Singers and our tech crews. “BroFo,” as it’s come to be known, is a musical revue of songs from Broadway musicals. Each year, solos, duets, trios, and group numbers have been
chosen by students in partnership with the vocal director, and a stage production is rehearsed and stitched together from scratch during the first two months of school. It’s an impressive and often chaotic undertaking that is fueled by student passion for singing show tunes, and their remarkable
support for one another. Our teaching goals include exploration of the expansive and diverse Broadway songbook through performance, including vocal production, key selection, working with an accompanist, staging, mikes and lights, and live communication with an audience.

Broadway tunes are a versatile playground that can be reshaped in many different ways. The vocal and technical directors help students to explore and discover their own version of a song, which is sometimes performed in its original show context or sometimes performed with a new twist. Given our prodigious and at times provocative source material, we sometimes make judicious edits and add program notes to help the audience to understand content concerns and to embrace the risks that students take when they release their voices into the world. Much of what students learn, they take in directly from the live audience response, so we are very grateful for your indispensable role in our students’ learning.
